Dog Tired Hooked Rug

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
16245 $50.00 14 $235.00

Winning Bid Amount

$235.00

This dog is tired... DOG TIRED! Not to mention cute. My sleepy pup is dreaming sweet dreams, which no doubt involve bones and mud and smelly things in which to roll. And remember, a tired dog is a good dog!

There are three blue fabric tabs for hanging the rug from a dowel. It measures 18.5"W x 14"H and is hooked on rug warp. It is "fine" (as opposed to "primitive") hooking, meaning I use fine-cut strips of cut wool fabric, each loop pulled up by hand. I dyed most of the wool myself. There's a little bit of novelty yarn hooked into the background amongst the stars, to add sparkle and texture.

Agatha has been a horse lover for as long as she can remember.  She is a self-taught and donates her talent regularly to groups like ours.

Her family emigrated from Poland to Germany when she was just a little girl. She didn't understand the language so spent a lot of her time doodling horses in school. That's how her passion for drawing started.

Now Agatha lives with her four legged friends on a small farm in Quebec, CANADA.  She shares her life with Coconut, a rescue horse she bought in 2003. A German Shepherd named Pumkin, a bunny named Jake, a rooster named Jack and two lovely chickens named Flower and Butterfly.

Agatha volunteers regularly and offers many Portraits to the Refuge de Galahad in Quebec which helps save horses from slaughter.

We are so happy to have Agatha participate once again at our Anniversary.

"Evan King's art brings to mind fantasies of Toulouse-Lautrec transplanted from metropolitan Paris to the Canadian wilderness.  King's work in acrylics (usually on wood) evoke an earlier, simpler era.

Evan King's experience traveling throughout his native Canada and its variety of landscape has helped him develop an eye for the nature of each particular place that enables him to create works that are completely transporting in spite of their total disinterest in anything approaching photorealism." "school was terrific but my father, Richard, was the best photography teacher of all. My favourite classes are the ones I still take - outings and workshops that teach me new ideas and new photography techniques with a great group of like minded friends. All of these different photographers, artists and teachers have taught me to look through my lens and see the world in a different light - see things from a new perspective - try a new angle; don't be afraid to experiment and think outside the box. I'm loving every minute of this journey. "

$60.00

'The Wolves of Midnight' Signed limited edition print #200/250 12x12 inches printed on Archival paper. value $50

Inspired by the untouched and rugged landscape of Canada’s north, Yellowknife-based visual artist Robbie Craig captures the essence of the North’s beauty in his own unique style.

bio:

Art has always been a passion of mine.

I come from a long line of artists. My mother is a highly creative soul and watercolour artist, as is my grandfather, and great-grandfather before him. As a small child, I remember watching my mother paint, in awe of her creativity. As I grew older, I would often gaze with bewilderment at my great-grandfather’s paintings that adorned several walls of our house. Even at a young age, I loved the feeling of creating “something from nothing”. I would spend countless hours sketching my favourite super-heroes and dreaming up new characters of my own. I can still recall the excitement that I felt when I completed a drawing. That feeling is addictive and is one that I still crave to this day.

As a teenager, growing up in Barrie, Ontario, I continued to enroll in my high school art classes, but the time I spent sketching and drawing was replaced by afterschool workouts as well as football or rugby practice. It wasn’t long before I found myself in the whirlwind of university life. I studied health science at the University of Western Ontario and indulged in the student lifestyle – late nights, spending time with friends, working out, and studying. The thought of creating anything but an essay or research paper was a distant memory.

After completing my first degree, my wife Nicole (girlfriend at the time) and I decided that we needed an adventure. At the advice of my grandfather who said, “Education is something that no one can take away from you”, we enrolled in teacher’s college at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. My experience in New Zealand was nothing short of amazing. The culture and pristine beauty of this country cannot be compared. When I wasn’t attending classes, I was taking full advantage of the warm climate and my beautiful surrounds by spending time outdoors.

Upon returning from New Zealand with my teaching degree, I soon found myself in a major dilemma – not only were teaching jobs scarce in Ontario, but I desperately craved adventure and an escape from the ordinary, mundane lifestyle I found myself in. When searching the Internet one evening, I came across an advertisement for teaching jobs in the North. Without hesitation, I completed the necessary forms and submitted my CV.

A few months later, I received a phone call about a potential teaching job opportunity. Two days and two interviews later, Nicole and I myself agreed to move to a small remote community in the Northwest Territories. I was soon to be principal and K-3 teacher at Alexis Arrowmaker School in Weweet’i.

My first year in the North was full of unique challenges and experiences.

Needless to say, I instantly feel in love with my new home. I was drawn to the rugged landscape, tundra, and crooked “Seuss-like” trees. A professor of mine once said: “You will know when you find your ‘home’”. Well, for the first time in my life I could relate to that comment… I knew that I had finally found my ‘home’.

During my first year in the North, I found myself in an art store purchasing a sketchpad and some pencils. It had been a long time since I had sketched or drawn anything. I’m not sure what made me purchase these materials after so many years. Perhaps it was the childlike voice inside my head urging me to regain my former creativity… or maybe it was that the untouched landscape that surrounded me was simply begging to be revealed… Either way, the beauty of the North inspired me to connect with my creative side and passion for art.

My life has continued to evolve, both creatively and personally.

I find that I either have a volleyball, pencil, paintbrush, or baby in my hand! As an enthusiastic gym teacher by day, and loving husband, father, and artist by night, there is never a dull moment! I live each moment in the present and am ever grateful for the opportunity to create.

Shawna Erback

"Welcome! I'm so glad you would like to learn more about my work and studio! I am a Canadian artist from a beautiful valley in the West Kootenays, BC. Tens of thousands of collectors all around the world enjoy my paintings, prints and licensed designs.

I have been painting and designing since I was a child. My collectors have followed the journey of a little girl through fantastical fields and forests, past sad, lonely moons and on the backs of giant turtles and fairy peacocks. They have met my special friends, like my faithful heart pet, grand giraffes and majestic lions.

I offer a unique style of dreamscapes, blending together surrealism and fantasy with gothic or whimsical tones, depending on where my mood takes me. With each stroke of my brush, I weave together a story. I draw the viewer into my world where they can sit together for a while and share a moment.

If you would like to meet me and see my paintings in person, please visit my page HERE to keep updated on upcoming shows and appearances."

16307 $10.00 10 $37.00

Winning Bid Amount

$37.00

Dorris Heffron kindly donated a signed copy of her wonderful novel City Wolves.

"A moving historical tale and remarkable literary achievement, City Wolves is the story of Canada's first woman veterinarian, Meg Wilkinson. Born in 1870 on a farm near Halifax, Meg's childhood experience with wolves makes her determined to be a veterinarian. Supported by the seemingly eccentric Randolph Oliphant and inspired by the ancient Inuit who first turned wolves into sled dogs, Meg surpasses the horse doctors at vet college and becomes the notorious 'dog doctor of Halifax' in the 1890s. After her unusual marriage ends abruptly in Boston, Meg travels to Vancouver and up to the Yukon, seeking the legendary sled dogs. Arriving at the beginning of the Klondike gold rush, she makes her way amidst Mounties, dance hall girls, Klondike Kings, mushers, priests and swindlers...all the mangy and magnificent people, dogs and spirits that populated raucous Dawson City.

Observed through the restless spirit of Inuit Ike, this is lively, insightful, historical fiction, subtly revealing the wolf-like nature of humans and the human nature of wolves. Both earthy and reflective, City Wolves is an important story told with compassion, humour and unflinching realism. In this her fifth novel, Dorris Heffron has created a wide range of unforgettable characters and achieved a breadth of vision exploring the deep conflicts and interconnection of social beings in a way that is uniquely Canadian and profoundly universal."

Born in Noranda, Quebec, Dorris Heffron has an Honours  B.A.(1967),and M.A.(1969) in Literature and Philosophy from Queen's University, Canada. Heffron lived in Oxford, England from 1968-1980 where she was a tutor for Oxford University and The Open University, giving courses in Literature. While there, she wrote three novels about teenagers, published by Macmillan, London. Internationally acclaimed, they are regarded as pioneers in the genre of young adult fiction. They were translated and put on highschool courses in Europe, Japan and Canada.  During sabbaticals, she taught creative writing at the University of Malaysia and resided while writing and teaching, in Holland, France and Cape Breton Island. Heffron returned to Toronto in 1980.

She has served on the National Council of The Writers' Union, the Board of Directors of PEN Canada, The Writers Trust of Canada, the Toronto Arts Council and the Board of Directors of the Native Men's Residence. She has been a library writer-in-residence and book reviewer for the Globe and Mail

In Ottawa, on June 2nd, 2013, at their 40th anniversary, Dorris Heffron became Chair of                        The Writers’ Union of Canada.

Heffron's first adult's novel, the popular, A Shark in the House is about a woman dentist in Toronto who reluctantly finds herself involved in the aboriginal standoff at Oka. Told with humour and compassion, it is a story of love and striving, death and survival, of people on both sides of the barricades.

Heffron's new novel, City Wolves is the story of Canada's first woman veterinarian who becomes the notorious 'Dog Doctor of Halifax' in the 1890s and winds up in the Klondike gold rush tending sled dogs. At the heart of the novel is the ancient story of how wolves became sled dogs. Uniquely Canadian and profoundly universal, City Wolves  subtly  reveals the human nature of wolves and the wolf-life nature of humans.

Dorris Heffron now lives at Little Creek Wolf Range, two hours north of Toronto, with her husband and sled dogs. She has children and step children and a dozen little grand kids.

Sheepy Wool Dryer Balls

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
16376 $20.00 8 $36.00

Winning Bid Amount

$36.00

Lynn’s Lids Sheepy Wool Dryer Balls.

These 100% wool dryer balls are made with a combination of needle felting and wet felting. The core in most of them is recycled wool, wrapped in wool roving, wrapped in yarn.

The roving and yarn are natural (undyed) wool from an Ontario farm that uses natural practices, and does not broadcast pesticides.

They will not bleed colours into your clothing.

They are about 17 cm (6 3/4") in circumference (sizes vary), and weigh just under 50g/2oz each.

Wool dryer balls help reduce dryer time by bouncing around, separating clothing to create better air flow, and soaking up some of the dampness.

They soften clothes and are safe for cloth diapers and sensitive skin.

If you like some fragrance in there, you can add a couple of drops of your favourite essential oil to the balls.

The balls should last several years.

Shipping varies across the country from about $8-20. To the US it's around $8.50.

Retail Value: $40

Sheltie Earrings

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
16363 $10.00 2 $15.00

Winning Bid Amount

$15.00

These "sheltie" earrings are hand cut from copper sheet and then flame painted.

Copper flame painting is a process whereby colors and patterns are created on copper, not by the use of paints or chemicals but by the manipulation of oxygen molecules on the surface of the piece.

Using an oxyacetylene torch, varying colors are produced by the number and length of times that heat is applied. Color is also influenced by the composition of the air on a given day. Therefore, each piece is unique. A polyurethane finish prevents colors from fading or changing.

Due to the unique characteristics of flame painting, colors and patterns on each piece may vary.

Earrings measure approximately 1 x 3/4 inches and hang from surgical steel hooks.

HOW COOL ARE THEY!

To learn more about them, follow this link: www.redcanoebrands.com

In 1999 Red Canoe was conceived in a bush plane over the pristine wilderness of Northern Ontario.

Sudbury Ontario native Dax Wilkinson grew up with these experiences but had been transplanted to the big city of Toronto. While the aspiring entrepreneur and designer developed products for different brands, close friends from home were becoming professional Bush Pilots.

A treasured invitation from one such friend for a flight in a deHavilland DHC-2 Beaver led to a ‘flashbulb moment.’ The pilot compared his plane to a passing Harley Davidson…. The sound was comparable but better. The passion that owners and enthusiasts happily expressed was equal. The utility of the machines and their relative impacts on Canada were quite different; the DHC-2 was the tool by which much of the Canadian landscape had been made accessible.

The imagery, romance and heritage of the unique lifestyle this form of travel represents are hard to express. Those that live it carry forward a tradition of the Canadian pioneers who pushed the limits of possibility in the face of all the adversity our rugged landscape could muster.

The deHavilland Beaver is a remarkable example of Northern Canadian ambition. The land’s unique requirements inspired a design that would allow expansion of Canadian possibilities. The increased utility of this rugged aircraft changed our country forever.

Wilkinson decided to create a product line inspired by Canadian icons with great stories like the DHC-2 Beaver. Many of these stories were unknown, fading from memory or taken for granted. Those few individuals that knew them well would welcome any banner that invited the uninitiated to take interest.

A Little Bit of Labrador (With a hint of Newfoundland)

Item ID Starting Bid Bids Current Bid
16405 $100.00 4 $120.00

Winning Bid Amount

$120.00

A Little Bit of Labrador (With a hint of Newfoundland)

This beautiful basket is filled with special items from Labrador and Monica Surina of "Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador" .  You will find a handmade “Parka” doll, yummy “Pure Labrador” partridgeberry jam and syrup, and some handmade caribou earrings.  The basket also comes with what Labrador is well known for – Labradorite!  It includes a beautiful 5 piece coaster set (4 coasters + coaster holder), lovely Labradorite book mark, and a stunning Labradorite necklace (16”) and earring set.  And to make sure that you get a tiny taste of Newfoundland as well, the basket includes some delicious Newfoundland made partridgeberry tea, chocolate bars along with mini jams.

What is Labradorite:  The origin of Labradorite comes from a story of a wandering Inuit warrior who came upon the Northern Lights trapped in stone.  With a mighty blow of his spear, he freed most of the lights which are now seen at night in the northern skies of Labrador.  However, some of the lights remained trapped in the stone, resulting in beautiful Labradorite.

What is a Parka doll:  What could be more Labradorian than a family of Parka people?  For the winter months of the year, traditional parkas are the dress of the traditional Labrador family.  We never see the unhappy ones, because they are too cold to come out of their houses because they haven’t got parkas yet!  Happiness is a parka on a winter’s day.

Value: $200

Weight: 10 lbs

Please consider the shipping costs that will be the responsibility of the winner of this basket.  The basket will be taken apart to ship to the winner.  Basket not included.
